Have you heard all the talk about dairy? Have you wondered if it’s really good for you?

Many of us love dairy products and lots of our comfort foods include them; cream in coffee, cheese in lasagna and even stuffed into crusts of pizza. And what would summer be without ice cream?

But is dairy working for you and your body?

There is lots of information out there for both sides. One side says dairy is a great source for calcium (it is) and the others say there are other ways to get it (there are and I’ll write more about this another time).

There’s also talk that dairy can cause or aggravate digestive disorders, PMS symptoms, allergies and other health issues.

So how do you know what’s right for you?

First ask yourself, do you eat dairy occasionally or is a big part of your diet? Do you experience bloating, headaches, post-nasal drip, skin breakouts, cramps or fatigue? If you answered yes, you may want to remove all dairy products including milk, cheese, butter and yogurt from your diet for several weeks.

During this time, notice any changes in how you feel. Are you still experiencing the symptoms or are some better or even gone? After being off dairy, you can either start gradually adding it back in, again noticing any changes in how you feel or just decide you like how you feel without it.

Just keep experimenting until you find what makes you feel the best. Also keep in mind that just like other foods you eat, if you have dairy, consider where it came from!

If you make the decision to cut back or give up dairy, never fear! There are many dairy alternatives available including milks, cheeses, yogurts and desserts made from soy, rice and nuts. Now even lots of coconut milk products are showing up in stores. You have lots of options to enjoy!
