Happiness Is An Inside Job

I’ve been thinking a lot about happiness lately. There have been times, even years, where I was not very happy. During those times, I’d tell myself “I’ll be happy when (fill in the blank) happens.” It usually involved other people doing something differently and/or changes in external situations for me to be happy. I really believed my happiness depended on something outside myself. A few years ago I realized that I was the only one who could make me happy and I started on a journey to figure out how to make it happen.

When you’ve decided you want more happiness in your life, how do you start to make that happen? Here are some ideas for you to try:

Make it a priority. This is important because it brings your awareness to wanting more of it. It also helps you be on the lookout for what really makes you happy
Sometimes it hard to see the forest for the trees. To help uncover the good things in your life and raise your feeling of happiness, start a gratitude journal and every day write down 5 things that you’re grateful for
Holding grudges and nursing grievances can affect physical as well as mental health. Practice forgiveness to raise your happiness level
Learn and do self care practices such as meditation, rhythmic breathing, yoga, or relaxation techniques to turn down anxiety and promote more happiness
Foster your relationships with happy people who really care about you. It’s a fact that you will be like the 5 people you spend the most time with
Engage in meaningful activities. Have you noticed how when your mind becomes absorbed in something that challenges you and you love, you feel happier?
